Without them saying a word and without any forces, you tell them what animal they are thinking of. No sleight of hand needed. Other than the method, what makes this work so well on stage is the routining. It begins comically, showing comical animal drawing that are hard to identify, then segues smoothly into a baffling magic climax.
Niagara Selection: A selected card is lost in the deck. A glass is filled with water and inverted. The water does not spill. You turn your back to the volunteer and he starts silently going through the cards. Even though you can't see the volunteer, the water spills at the exact moment he reaches his selection. Nearly every one and their mother presents the hydrostatic glass the same way. In my opinion, Niagara Selection is a big step forward.
